Dog Walking Allowed at Holland, Michigan Cemeteries

The Holland City Council in Ottawa Co., Michigan recently dismissed a proposal to ban dog walking in two city cemeteries, Graafschap and Pilgrim Home, reports an article in the Grand Rapids Press. This one caught my eye, as some of my Hoekstra family members are buried at Pilgrim Home. I can't say I agree with the city council on this one.

Hmmmm.

I can see not allowing dog walking in cemeteries. But it kind of blows my mind that there are parks that ban dogs. I'm glad there are few if any around here that ban them. Dog parks aren't for everyone (and many breed illness and disease if not taken care of).

Hi, Colleen,

I know you are a dog lover and I know you are also a responsible pet owner. I have to say that in my own neighborhood, people like you are few and far between. I am always appreciative of dog owners who keep their pets on a leash and clean up after them. I know animals needs the exercise and it's necessarily for urban communities to set aside places for them to run and play. Cemeteries, in my opinion, are not appropriate for that purpose, mainly because there are always those few irresponsible pet owners that ruin things for everyone else!
